Malcolm spun around in the silent aftermath, stunned by the disrupting force of the quake. Most of the crowd was gone by now and the Dipstick was dark, only a few people could be heard from inside the small building. A couple walked by Malcom and the girl sobbed to her boyfriend as she held her phone up to the sky. He comforted her, “I’m sure your parents are fine.”

“But they were on the third floor,” she cried.

Where did they go? Malcolm wasn’t sure if he should stay put or start walking. After a few minutes of contemplating he decided to wait and see if they came back. He found a chair that was knocked over and a table still standing on the patio and made himself cozy. He realized something, he was all alone. Possibly free. He could run off right this very moment and never look back. The FBI would be off his back, and he wouldn’t have to be a part of Robinhood or that crazy family. This was good, this was really good, a blessing in disguise. But, where would he go? He had no money, and he couldn’t be like Nik and steal from others even if they were shady characters. An eye for an eye just wasn’t who he was.

He saw a group of four twenty-somethings walk by, talking, no laughing or horsing around, just talking and showing their support for one another as they each held up phones. As he observed them an unsettling feeling came over him, and he rubbed his chilled arm. He was free but at what cost? Maybe being all alone wasn’t as great as he had made it out to be.

There was no one nearby to ask him if he was okay. No one had his back, and he was quickly reminded of that lonely feeling he had growing up in the foster care homes. He was always a team of one until the Wilson’s came along. That day Rakel defended him had said a lot.

“He did what to you?” Rakel asked, her voice rising with each word.

Malcolm squirmed a little, not sure if he should have told on his former foster dad. He was a bad man, but he still felt a little insecure about telling an adult. He usually just sucked the offenses up and went on, never paying much attention to the justice of it all.

“Oh, no, oh, hell, no.” Rakel grabbed her cell phone and called their lawyer. “We need to talk about pressing assault charges against a foster parent. Malcolm,” Rakel held the phone close to her ear while taking his hand in hers. “Honey, look at me. Don’t be scared. This man did wrong, and he will not get away with it.”

Malcolm nodded, his lips closed tightly together. When she ended the call, he asked. “Are you going to still adopt me?”

She took his dark cheeks in her pale skinned hands and looked deep into his soul and saw the lifetime of pain, loneliness, let downs and lost hope.
